St. Moses' Mart
Feeding Body & Soul
"For I was hungry and you gave me food."
— Matthew 25:35
St. Moses Mart is an 18,000 sq. ft. Orthodox Christian food bank and chapel rising in the heart of Shreveport's MLK Jr. neighborhood — transforming a historic grocery store into a beacon of mercy, nourishment, and worship for all who need it.
A Sanctuary Reborn

What was once Lo-Mart Grocery Store — a neighborhood institution founded in 1975 in the MLK Jr. / Cooper Road area of Shreveport, Louisiana — is being reborn as something far greater. St. Moses Mart is an 18,000 square foot facility being transformed by the grace of God and the generosity of the faithful, into a free community food market and Orthodox Christian chapel.
Led by Father Jason and rooted in the ancient Orthodox Christian tradition, the food bank is entirely dedicated to St. Moses the Black — the fourth-century Desert Father who himself journeyed from a life of hardship to become one of the Church's greatest saints of mercy and humility. His life is our model.
We are partnering with the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank to distribute hundreds of thousands of pounds of free food annually — fresh produce, canned goods, dairy, meats, and more — to those who qualify.
Mission & Faith
"We want to be a place where people can come and receive food, and also receive the love of God."
Distributing hundreds of thousands of pounds of free food annually through our partnership with the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank — produce, meats, dairy, canned goods, and hot meals.
The Chapel of St. Simon of Cyrene provides a sacred space for Orthodox Christian worship — Divine Liturgy, Vespers, and the sacramental life of the ancient Church.
After-school programs, hot meals three times a week, and a community of volunteers united by the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves.
St. Moses the Black
Born in Ethiopia, Moses was a former slave and robber chief who experienced a radical conversion and became one of the greatest Desert Fathers of the Egyptian wilderness. His life — from violence and hardship to profound holiness — makes him the perfect patron for a mission that meets people where they are, without judgment.
His famous saying, "Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything," reflects the Orthodox conviction that transformation comes through humility, prayer, and faithful service — exactly the spirit of St. Moses Mart.

Chapel & Worship

Chapel of St. Simon of Cyrene
Within the walls of St. Moses Mart, a chapel is being established and dedicated to St. Simon of Cyrene — the man compelled to carry the cross of Christ on the road to Calvary. Like Simon, we are called to bear one another's burdens.
Father Jason envisions a space where the ancient liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church is celebrated in the midst of a community food bank — where the Eucharist and the feeding of the hungry exist side by side, as they did in the earliest Christian communities.
The chapel will feature an iconostasis, Byzantine-style icons, and the full cycle of Orthodox worship — open to all who seek the living God.
"The chapel and the food bank are not two separate things. They are one mission — to love God and to love our neighbor. You cannot do one without the other."
